On December 9th, 10th and 11th, Carrigaline & District Lions Club members will organise collection points at Barry Collins SuperValu and Dunnes Stores, Carrigaline for their annual Christmas Appeal. Shoppers are asked to buy an extra food item (like pasta, rice, tinned vegetables, sweets, savories and other not immediately perishable food) and then place it in the trolleys provided. With this food we make up hampers which are then given to charities like St. Vincent de Paul for distribution to needy families in the local area.
Carrigaline & District Leo Club held their first ever Jingle Bell Walk on Saturday 4th December at the Carrigaline – Crosshaven walkway. Despite the frosty weather, there was an excellent turnout although the icy conditions meant that the walking part of the event could not take place. Indeed it could have been called the Jingle Bell Skating Event. However, the children recieved their goody bags, jingle bells and santa hats and even managed a chorus of Jingle Bells! The Leos would like to thank all those who braved the elements to attend and money raised from the event will go towards the Lions Christmas Food Appeal and Bernardos. For further information on Carrigaline Leos, see here.
Pictured at the Jingle Bell Walk were Leos Orla Duane, Grace Kiely, Silvia Phelan, Hugh Duane and Niamh Quinlan and Lion John Doran, Leo Club Advisor.
The 2010 Carrigaline Lions Cycle Classic had the largest number of participating cyclists ever in its 19 year history. Over 200 people cycled in the event which took place between Carrigaline and Bantry on Saturday October 9th. The majority of cyclists covered the full distance of 95km but shorter courses of 65km and 35km were also available to enable as many people as possible to participate. The event raised over €40,000 for various charities with Marymount Hospice again this year being a major beneficiary. Cyclists were accompanied along the route by Irish cycling legend Sean Kelly and the event culminated in a dinner held in the Maritime Hotel in Bantry on Saturday evening. A big thanks to all who took part and helped to make this yet again an incredibly successful and enjoyable fundraising event.
BANTRY is the new destination this year for Carrigaline Lions Club’s 19th Annual Cycle Classic on Saturday October 9th 2010. Past world cycling champion Sean Kelly will also participate for the third time.
One of the nominated charities which Carrigaline Lions Club has supported over the years is Marymount Hospice. Other charities to benefit will be the Jack and Jill Foundation along with Carrigaline Senior Citizens and other local charities.
To date, the Carrigaline Lions Cycle Classic, which has also gone to Killarney, Kenmare, Baltimore and Dungarvan has raised in excess of €550,000.
Last year we had approximately 165 cyclists and this year we also feel that this can be achieved again with the help of local industries such as Pepsico and our many other supporters and sponsors.
The event will commence from the Owenabue car park, Carrigaline, on October 9th. Registration will be at 10.30am and the cyclists will depart at 11am. The route will be from Carrigaline to Innishannon, Bandon, Ennniskeane, Ballineen, Dunmanway, Drimoleague and on to Bantry. There will also a fun cycle of 35 kilometres to Bantry from a point in West Cork.
Refreshments will again be provided en route.
Further information can be obtained by contacting Mark Ginn at 021-4373088. A booking form must be obtained and on completion of this, sponsorship cards will be issued.

Carrigaline & District Lions Club organised a coffee morning last Saturday in aid of the Jack & Jill Foundation. The event was held in the Carrigaline Court Hotel and was well attended by people from the Carrigaline area. The Jack & Jill Foundation provides care and support for children with severe neurological development issues, as well as offering some respite to their parents and families. The Lions club was fortunate to have Jonathan Irwin, CEO and one of the founders of Jack & Jill in atendance last Saturday. Jonathan gave a very moving talk about the problems faced by parents of children born with severely debilitating conditions based on the experience of his own son Jack. The event was very kindly sponsored by Heronswood Childcare Centre.

The Annual Lions Club Christmas Food Appeal was held on December 10th, 11th and 12th at Barry Collins SuperValu and Dunnes Stores in Carrigaline. Members of the Carrigaline Lions Club led by organiser, Lion Sean Duggan, took turns manning the food stands at both stores. The response from the public was excellent and a large amount of food along with a substantial amount of money was donated. The food will distributed by the Society of the St. Vincent De Paul. Thanks to everyone who donated so generously to our appeal and thanks also to SuperValu and Dunnes for their co-operation.
175 cyclists took part in this years Cycling Classic which again ran from Carrigaline to Dungargan. Over the past 18 years, this event has raised over €500,000 and this year was the most successful yet raising over €50,000 for the various beneficiaries including Marymount Hospice, ARC Cancer Support and the Hope Foundation.
Following the official start by Minister for Foreign Affairs, Micheál Martin, the cyclists left Carrigaline last Saturday in bright sunshine. The route took them through Raffeen and Monkstown to Glenbrook where they boarded the Cross River ferry to Carrigaloe on the Cobh side. They then made their way across the Belvelly bridge past Fota and on to the main Waterford road at Carrigtwohill. The main bunch of cyclists were acompanied by cycling legend Sean Kelly who provided much needed inspiration for those with flagging legs. A ”soup kitchen” was set up at Youghal bridge where soup, sandwiches and choclate bars were dished out to the cycling masses. After that, it was a series of long hills before the final decent into Dungarvan and Lawlors Hotel for some well earned refreshment. The first cyclists arrived in Dungarvan at 2pm, less than three hours after leaving Carrigaline with the last of the stragglers arriving in about 4:30pm.
A big thanks to all participants and their sponsors whose generous fundraising effort will benefit Marymount Hospice, ARC Cancer Support, Hope Foundation, Senior Citizens and other Lions Club Charities. Thanks also to our main sponsor Kellogs Ireland, road sponsor Ulster Bank and Cross River Ferries for their support.
800 people turned out last Sunday to walk from Carrigaline to Crosshaven for charity. The walk started in the centre of Carrigaline on a fine sunny afternoon and finished in the square in Crosshaven, a total distance of about 8km.
Rockin’ Gerry kept the crowds entertained until the official start of the walk shortly after 3pm. First to leave was Irish Olympic walker, Robbie Heffernan accompanied by a few runners. Then members of Carrigaline Pipe Band led the walkers out of the car park towards the Croshaven road. Refreshments were provided along the way and the Owenabue Valley Traditional Group provided entertainment. The walk finished in the square in Croshaven where the crowds enjoyed the fine weather and live music provided by the Aristocrats. The event has raised over €12,000 so far and the proceeds will go towards the Mercy Hospital Foundation, Croshaven Development and a number of Lion’s Club charities. Some of the money will also be used for the on-going development of the walkway itself. A big thanks to all walkers, sponsors and everyone who helped to make this a very enjoyable and successful event.
